MAJOR PROGRAM TITLE: Environmental Enhancement: Horticulture Education
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
Context/Situation: Gardening is one of the most popular pastimes of Americans today. It also has therapeutic qualities for both the young and old. In addition, because of the many gardens located in the county, horticulture services are an important industry in our region.
Broad Program Goals (Overall Purpose/Outcome Statements):
To provide Otsego County residents with information that is environmentally responsible and covers all phases of landscape improvement, vegetable and fruit production and pest control. To offer innovative educational services for all ages to promote gardening activities.
Objectives (Specific Outcomes for Specific Audiences):
- Increase the Master Gardener program through participation in the annual training for new master gardeners, and monthly in-service meetings and participation in community events for current master gardeners.
- Conduct public education events such as the Spring Garden Day, Fall Lecture Series, Fall Harvest display.
- Develop an intergenerational garden project at the county nursing home.
- Support 4-H program initiatives to include the junior Master Gardner Program and "Gardens on Parade".
- Continue to develop horticulture initiatives as identified such as American Chestnut Tree Reintroduction, the Non-indigenous, Invasive Species, Horticulture Sales Training, and Integrated Pest Management Practices.
- Produce informational items such as Farm Produce Map and Master Gardener Newsletters.
How will goals be met? (Educational Strategy):
- Conferences, workshops, seminars, and field trips for homeowners and students.
- Direct teaching to students, Master Gardeners and the general public.
- Press releases, brochures, fact sheets and bulletins from Cornell Cooperative Extension.
