MAJOR PROGRAM TITLE: Environmental Enhancement: Agriculture Environmental Practices & Water Quality Issues
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
Context/Situation: A number of the pristine lakes and streams in Otsego County are part of the Upper Susquehanna Watershed. Protection of the quality of surface and groundwater is a high priority with an increasing emphasis on non-point source pollution and watershed-based management. There are a number of public and private organizations located in the county that monitor the environmental quality and practices of residents.
Broad Program Goals (Overall Purpose/Outcome Statements):
To be a partner and resource to producers, residents and others regarding best management practices to ensure a sound environment and good water quality for the area.
Objectives (Specific Outcomes for Specific Audiences):
- Participate as a member of the Otsego County Water Quality Coordinating Committee to assist in developing local initiatives to address environmental/water quality concerns.
- Assist producers in implementing best management practices on their farms.
- Provide educational forums/tours in conjunction with USDA and others to promote conservation and assist producers in identifying resources to implement conservation measures.
- Work with SUNY Oneonta Biological Field Station, Otsego 2000 and Otsego County Conservation Association and the Public Health Department to promote safe environmental practices in the Otsego Lake vicinity.
How will goals be met? (Educational Strategy):
- Partner with the stakeholders mentioned by attending meetings, developing educational material, serving as a resource for information from Cornell University and facilitating coordination among entities.
